March 2023: The 2023 Annual E&O Loss Control Seminars

E&O Report Header
March 2023 |  Volume 38, Number 3

This year the Big I NY and Big I CT Annual Errors & Omissions Loss Control Seminars will once again be presented by me, Jim Keidel, along with my partner Chris Weldon, and also with Brian Bixby, of Big I NY and Big I CT.  If you are interested in attending the upcoming seminars, you should contact the association and register as soon as possible, since space is limited and is filling up quickly.  Although for the past two years the annual E&O presentations have been offered only as webinars, and not as live seminars, we are happy to say that this year we will once again have both.  If you would like to find out more information about what this year's annual E&O seminars/webinars will cover, when and where they will be presented, and how to register for a session, then continue reading.

The live seminars this year will be presented in April and May at three locations from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
The locations and dates for the live seminars are as follows:
  • April 18th – Meriden, CT
  • April 27th – Syracuse, NY
  • May 11th – Rye Brook, NY

In addition to the three live seminars, there will also be three webinar presentations that agents and brokers can attend.
The dates and times for the webinars are as follows:
  • June 1st – 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • July 12th – 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
  • September 13th – 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The webinars will cover all of the same topics as the three-hour live seminars. Attendees of the E&O seminars and webinars will receive 3.0 continuing education credits for all licenses in NY and 3.0 LRE continuing education credits for licenses in Connecticut.  Depending on the size of an agency or brokerage and the number of people from it who attend the E&O presentation, an agency or brokerage may qualify for a premium credit if it is insured with Swiss Re or Fireman's Fund Insurance Company on an errors and omissions insurance policy issued through the NY or CT association.

In addition to receiving continuing education credit and potential premium credit, as usual, seminar and webinar attendees will learn essential and practical E&O loss control techniques that can help reduce the likelihood of an E&O claim or lawsuit.  During the seminars and webinars, we will review “real life" E&O claims, lawsuits and regulatory matters to help illustrate the issues that we are discussing.  In our experience, discussing actual claims and cases helps the attendees better understand the impact of following the various E&O loss control practices.  When used consistently by agencies and brokerages, these E&O loss control practices will not only reduce the likelihood of an E&O claim or lawsuit but will also help provide better customer service and additionally will frequently enable the agency or brokerage to sell more insurance.

During this year's annual E&O presentations we will cover the following topics:
  • A review and detailed discussion of actual E&O lawsuits
  • The legal, ethical and procedural issues that arise when an agency is sued by a client
  • Review of recent decisions issued by courts in E&O matters
  • A panel discussion of the issues that cannabis presents for the insurance industry
  • Regulatory matters involving NY and CT insurance agencies and brokerages
  • The best practices for the use of documentation

We encourage all New York and Connecticut insurance agents and brokers to register as soon as possible for either a live seminar or webinar.

You can register for the annual E&O seminars and webinars by visiting the education section of the Big I NY or Big I CT website at www.BigINY.Org or www.BigICT.org or by calling Big I NY at 800-851-8853 or Big I CT at 860-563-1950.

We are looking forward to this year's annual E & O presentations and we hope that all of you will be able to attend one of the scheduled sessions.
