DFS ID Pro Tip: Try Resetting Your Password

The volume of inquiries from Big I New York members having trouble with the New York State Department of Financial Services’ DFS ID system has slowed from the levels we saw in February, March, and April. However, we’re still receiving calls and emails from frustrated users who find that their authentication codes are consistently rejected.

One potential solution? Try resetting your password.

When you reach the DFS ID sign-in screen, enter your email address, and rather than entering your password, click the “Forgot Password?” link. This should trigger the system to send an email to you with a link to change your password. Click the link, enter a new password, and the next screen should ask you to scan a QR code using the authenticator app on your smartphone (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, etc)

The system should then ask you for a one-time passcode and a nickname for your device (I came up with the creative name “Tim’s phone”). Once you’ve input that, your authenticator app should link to DFS ID. On every attempt to sign in after that, enter the six-digit code from the app. This should allow you to sign in.

If this solution fails to work, you will need to seek help from the department. Their IT staff is aware that licensed individuals have been hitting this roadblock.

We hope this helps.
