IIABNY, NY State Insurance Fund Hold ‘Productive’ Meeting

Producer trade group discusses business issues with state’s largest Workers’ Compensation insurance provider

(DeWitt, New York, Dec. 8, 2014) — The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York (IIABNY) and the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF) discussed a number of business issues during a three-hour meeting in Manhattan recently. The meeting, which participants described as productive, took place at the NYSIF offices in New York City on Oct. 29.

The discussion centered on NYSIF’s underwriting, claims and audit procedures. New York insurance brokers have expressed concerns to IIABNY regarding certain NYSIF practices. Participants also discussed how NYSIF implements certain New York legal requirements. A provision in New York State law requires employers to give NYSIF 30 days’ advance notice if they wish to drop their coverage.

The meeting, which included a large group of IIABNY member brokers who regularly obtain coverage from NYSIF, was arranged at the behest of IIABNY President and CEO Richard Poppa and NYSIF Executive Director and CEO Eric Madoff. The two leaders have held several conversations in the past year. These discussions resulted in NYSIF making changes to its computer systems to ease problems experienced by brokers and employers.

Both sides expect to continue exploring ways to improve the relationship between brokers and the NYSIF.
